Gotha Florida, History of Gotha, Orange County

In Orange County of central Florida, just about 20 minutes from downtown Orlando lies a charming little town called Gotha, FL. When H.A. Hempel, a German immigrant came to central in the late 1800s, he purchased a sizeable parcel of land from the state of Florida and began to lay out a town. The town would be named Gotha, for the town in Germany where Hempel was born, and the name remains to this day. The main street of Gotha, Hempel Avenue is named for the town’s founder.

Hempel quickly began an ad campaign to draw visitors and settlers from the north through mailed flyers and newspaper ads. He capitalized on the then fledgeling town’s only asset, the weather. Touting a year round warm climate with mild winters, Hempel was able to draw other German immigrants to Gotha and soon the town was a thriving little metropolis. Gotha has maintained its 19^th charm through the years, and what is left today is a quaint little central Florida town near to everything central Florida has to offer including:
