Hempel, a German immigrant came to central in the late 1800s, he purchased a sizeable parcel of land from the state of Florida and began to lay out a town. Hempel quickly began an ad campaign to draw visitors and settlers from the north through mailed flyers and newspaper ads. He capitalized on the then fledgeling town’s only asset, the weather. Touting a year round warm climate with mild winters, Hempel was able to draw other German immigrants to Gotha and soon the town was a thriving little metropolis.
